'Scrooged' has enough of these small but nasty touches to sustain interest, but subtlety is not its forte. It's a very loud movie and it may be abrasive to some, but I admired its imagination. I have a soft spot for Christmas movies with a biting edge, a dark tone, and the production design here is glorious, with the emphasis on NIGHT in Christmas Eve night.

The ghosts of Christmas past and present are especially fun, played by David Johansen and Carol Kane. The movie sounds great, too, thanks in part to another typically rich score by Danny Elfman.The movie falters when it gets preachy and sentimental, as it seems to grow more cynical when doing so.

The happy ending seems almost a parody of happy endings, but it's done with a straight face and feels uncomfortably saccharine, particularly in the context of this film. Bill Murray would basically reprise this character type and supernatural transformation in 'Groundhog Day,' a far better comedy, but he's good here, too. Few performers can pull off being so likable while playing characters so nasty.
